It was a panel discussion and Q&A session on using technology for genealogy. I got inspired again and decided that I needed to update my blog. A few weeks ago, I did some cleaning and straightening up in my office; I had papers everywhere! I was able to sort out what to keep and the genealogy papers then got sorted by surname. They are in the file cabinet, so at least I know where they are now and they won't get scattered around again. My next step will be to take out one surname folder at a time to look over what papers have information that I have not entered into my genealogy software and get them filed properly. Baby steps, just like weeding the real garden.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-24615631811274248962013-08-25T10:32:00.000-04:002013-08-25T10:32:00.438-04:00Genealogy Research DayYesterday I hosted a Genealogy Research Day. Several members of my local, informal genealogy group have said they wanted a day to work on research with other people so when they had questions, they would have someone to ask instead of just getting frustrated and stopping. That was my goal for yesterday. Not to have a "conference" with speakers, classes, etc. But rather a time for each person to work on their own research with the help of others.
If I do say so myself, I believe it was successful, in that is exactly how it worked. People with experience in one area were able to help others who needed it and were able to get help in areas that were not as familiar to them. From the evaluations I received, it was well received and additional, similar workshops would be welcomed.
I think I am on to something here!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-53980402490837393502012-10-11T21:09:00.000-04:002012-10-11T21:09:25.104-04:00Library of Congress tripI am going to the Library of Congress on Saturday with a local genealogy group. My feet were cold so I got out some slippers I made a few years ago. They are a bit big as they have stretched out but they remind me of some my dad was wearing the few years before he passed away. http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html a few times in the past but have not found much. In the past several days, I have had the opportunity to take some time to look through it more thoroughly and have been pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information I have found.

I have found several obituaries, but one in particular I was very happy to have located. My grandfather had a brother who died fairly young in a truck accident. I was always told he was from, and lived in, Michigan but I was never successful in finding anything about him in any Michigan resources. Well, it turns out, that while he died in Michigan, he was actually working for a trucking company based out of Chicago! Now I have a new clue on where to search.

The copy I have is a pdf and I have not figured out how to attach that type of file yet. If I do, I will post the obituary here!
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-45226924891374323262012-06-25T21:50:00.001-04:002012-06-25T21:50:41.125-04:00An Amazing WeekendI just had the most amazing weekend! I went to Pennsylvania with my mother as she wanted to attend a stamp show but did not want to drive. While she enjoyed her stamps, I enjoyed seeing some historic sites and making friends with cousins I had not met previously.

First, my 6th great-grandfather, Conrad Weiser lived in Womelsdorf, PA and I went to his homestead. While the buildings were not open, I got to walk around the grounds, peek in windows and see the monuments. http://conradweiserhomestead.org/index.asp

Then, I went to tour the Ephrata Cloister, where Conrad spent some time for spiritual reflection and renewal.

http://www.ephratacloister.org/

And, best of all, I spent Saturday morning and afternoon meeting and getting to know some cousins and share pictures and family stories. It was fantastic.
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-58669718742466338812012-06-20T07:37:00.003-04:002012-06-20T07:37:56.830-04:00Wedding WednesdayJune is a month full of weddings. I have counted 96 weddings in my family tree with only one day in June that does not have any, the 24th. I may find one for that day eventually!
Most of these weddings happened many, many years ago and were not the elaborate events we have today, but they still brought people and families together.
I want to highlight one wedding in particular, that of my parents. Last year, they celebrated 60 years together. It was bittersweet as Dad was in the hospital and passed away just 16 days later. But that anniversary day was one of his good days.
Obviously, I was not at their wedding, but I can comment on their marriage. As with many couples, they had their ups and downs, I am sure, but growing up they were loving and supportive of each other as well as their children. They have been a wonderful example of two people committed to making a happy life together and home for their family.
I hope that many of the other weddings that occurred in June resulted in equally happy marriages.
I have found several documents and bits of information I did not have before. It will take quite awhile to get through everything and get the appropriate information into my family tree but that's OK. I am really enjoying it.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-17280105398930902412012-03-15T11:02:00.002-04:002012-03-15T11:02:35.310-04:00I Took the Plunge!
After using Ancestry.com for research for several years, I decided to upload my family trees. I had been hesitant in the past due to privacy concerns, etc. I know there are safeguards in place to hide information on living people, but I was hesitant just the same. But, I decided to export my tree, doing one for reach grandparent and back and using the grandparent as the starting person; only ancestors, no descendants. This way there’s less of a problem with privacy as I did not use any living people. I decided to divide my trees rather than upload one large one so I can track them better. And I can name them with the primary surnames for that line. For me, it makes looking at connections easier.

Well, now I wonder why I waited so long! I have connected with cousins I haven’t been in contact with for years and have met some new ones I didn’t know I had. I’ve found information I didn’t have that would have taken many hours researching in various databases by individual.

I kept seeing the commercials for ancestry and the references to the little leaf. I didn’t know what they were talking about. Well, DUH! That’s because I didn’t have a tree in there. Once you upload your tree, ancestry does a search and finds documents and sources that may go along with the people in the tree. Many are census records, but there are matches to items in all their other databases as well. Also, it shows you other people who have the same person in their tree so you can connect with them or just follow when they have uploaded something new.

One great feature is the ability to attach photos and documents from other people’s trees to your own. I found some stories and pictures I didn’t have so added them. My mother checks ancestry now and then and she saw a picture I had added and asked me, “Where did you get a picture of Grandma Jenny’s headstone?!” It was wonderful to share that, and other finds with her.

So, I encourage anyone who has not uploaded a tree to ancestry, to do so and see what treasures you may find.

Happy Hunting!
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-87428108527570854342011-12-06T07:37:00.000-05:002011-12-06T07:37:04.788-05:00Advent Calendar-December 6-Santa ClausI remember writing letters to Santa, leaving milk and cookies and even carrots for the reindeer. But one particular memory that has stayed with me is about believing in Santa Claus. Santa was a big deal at our house, with 5 children and 10 years between the oldest and youngest we kept the tradition going on for quite some time. I do remember believing in Santa long after my friends and peers did. One day at school several of us were talking about Santa during recess. I very matter-of-factly stated that there had to be a Santa because how could parents afford all that stuff!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-6271989806323219322011-11-26T09:17:00.000-05:002011-11-26T09:17:00.046-05:00Sorting SaturdayI inherited a box of papers and notes that a great-aunt had when she was writing many of her books. I haven't yet opened it or gone through any of it because I want to have plenty of time when I do. Since I am getting caught up on other things this long week end, I hope to get into it later today.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-53909588184479199832011-11-24T16:49:00.000-05:002011-11-24T16:49:30.184-05:00Thriller ThursdayToday's blog prompt suggest thrilling stories from the past but I have one for today.
While doing some searching last night, I located a family tree on ancestry.com with familiar names. In looking at it more closely, I found that the submitter had the same great-grandfather as me! How exciting!!! Now, to try to get in touch with him; I check his profile and see that he hasn't logged in for over 6 months...bummer, I hope he gets my message.
Well, good news! He got the message and replied first thing this morning. And his profile lists him as living only abou 1 & 1/2 hours drive from one of my sisters! I am so excited and hope that we can share information.
I love meeting new relatives I did not know that I have.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-7408307058094564132011-11-22T23:17:00.000-05:002011-11-22T23:17:51.655-05:00Woodhead/Hollingworth ConnectionFor sometime now, I have been trying to find a connection between the surnames WOODHEAD and HOLLINGWORTH.
This started because of a list of birthdays my great-grandfather wrote up in a "Birthday Book" in the 1850's. His surname was Hollingworth. Scattered in among the Hollingworths and some other names I am familiar with, there are several with the surname Woodhead. I have not found any family members who know where that name fits in.
I have been searching on ancestry on and off for a few years but have really stepped up my search the past few days. I have found several records connecting all the Woodheads I have names for, but none connecting them to the Hollingworth family.
In the early 1800's, the many of the Hollingworths came to America but, apparently, the Woodheads stayed in England.
I will continue my search but am hoping this blog will help me get in touch with someone who knows of the Woodhead family.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-5940063270835044022011-11-12T13:37:00.000-05:002011-11-12T13:37:02.680-05:00Society SaturdayToday we at CHAT had a very nice meeting. We had a tour of the Jefferson County (WV) museum and our request to use their meeting room on a regular basis was approved. We talked about what topics to address in upcoming meetings and hope to join in the tour of Washington homes next Fall. We will be putting up fliers around town about our group and hope to get more members.
All in all, a good day.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-78439767509171757902011-11-08T21:12:00.000-05:002011-11-08T21:12:52.301-05:00Tombstone TuesdayMuch of my father's side of the family is from upstate New York; Monroe County, Hilton, specifically. I was there this past weekend and while visiting my father's grave and planting flowers there, I took pictures of others I had not connected to the family before. Now I just need to find the correct people in my database and connect the pictures to them. In the meantime, RIP Dad, I miss you.
But his paternal grandparents were still living and his grandmother taught me a few of the family recipes that Gregg requested. One was spaghetti sauce. Every time I make it, I think of her fondly. Today we are getting snow here in WV; yes, that's right, I said SNOW! Very unusual and won't last but it pretty and made it a good day for spaghetti sauce. In memory of Grandma Bender, I thought I would share the recipe as she told it to me. My notes are in parentheses but I try not too change it too much.

SPAGHETTI SAUCE
Grandma made hers in a large pot on the stove and let it simmer all day. I do it in a crock pot.
Grandma did not give amounts for most of the ingredients, just "to taste".

3-4 large cans of tomato paste (Grandma told me to be sure to get the kind with the picture of the lady on it <smile>
water: same amount as cans of tomato paste using the cans for measure to get all the extra paste out
1 onion, chopped (more or less as desired)
1 green pepper, chopped (more or less as desired)
Parmesan cheese
basil
thyme
oregano
garlic or garlic powder
onion powder if not using chopped onion
seasoned salt
(I also add mushrooms; if using canned, I also add the water)
olive oil

Mix all ingredients except reserving some onion and green pepper in large pot or crock pot. Bring to low boil then reduce heat and simmer several hours. When I use my crock pot, I usually have it cook about 6-8 hours.

MEATBALLS

1-1/2 lb. ground beef
1 egg
seasoned bread crumbs

Mix together 1 lb of ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, reserved onion and green pepper and all spices listed above for sauce. form into small to medium balls and add to sauce after sauce has cooked about an hour or so. Do not cook the meatballs before placing them in the sauce.
Cook the remaining ground beef in a small skillet, again adding the spices listed above. Add to sauce about half way through cooking. (I don't always do this, preferring instead to use all the meat for meatballs).
Tomorrow is genealogy day; first a local group of friends get together to talk research, etc. Then on to the FRECOGS meeting in Frederick, MD.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-60202740227324820902011-09-03T19:05:00.001-04:002011-09-03T19:05:35.429-04:00Society SaturdayI am a member of the DAR, thanks to my paternal grandmother. She worked very hard in the early 1970's to become a member and I was then able to join using her research. I am working on another ancestor through my mother's line, too.
I am also a member of the DUV-CW and was able to make that connection on my own. It was quite satisfying to be able to discover information that our family had not known before.
Currently I am working on an application to the Mayflower Society.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314996675055139760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6518704536624202067.post-87063275105755516712011-09-02T15:28:00.000-04:002011-09-02T15:28:27.819-04:00Funeral Card FridayI have pictures of several old funeral cards. The originals were my grandmother's and now, I believe my mother has them.
